As part of Social Media Week Lagos, Enyinne Owunwanne – founder of Heritage1960, a platform for global African fashion, lifestyle and design – hosted several online live sessions with designers and bloggers from the African Diaspora. In one of these inspiring discussions I came across the label Brother Vellies.

The company is based in Namibia, where the vellies are handmade – only 20 pair a day. Some interesting historical facts: These boots were first made in the 1600s, inspired by the footwear of the Khoikhoi and crafted using raw materials.

Brooklyn Artist Mickalene Thomas just started a collaboration with Brother Vellies and is showcasing their designs in a pop-up store called Décopolis: The talent of others. The objective of the store/exhibit is to enable “multiple genres and styles to create the essence of a fantastical pop-up”. The exhibit is still available until Sunday the 24th of February. I am so glad I found out about this, and I will make mostdef a trip to the lower East Side tomorrow!
